TNA District 9 Centennial Memories 1916 – 2016

NOTE:  In 2016, TNA District 9 is celebrating 100 years as a nursing association in Houston.  We will attempt to offer a brief anecdote from our archives, to help our members appreciate the significance of this year.

Fifty years ago, in 1966, TNA District 9’s office included the Official Professional Nurses Bureau.  From the early years of the 20th century, many nurses worked as “private duty” nurses, employed by individual families or physicians.  These nurses required a way to be assigned cases/work so a local registry or bureau (a listing of qualified registered nurses) facilitated their employment and offered a means of connecting interested nurses with potential patients.

A memory of this affiliation is currently displayed at the TNA District 9 office in the Rice Village, an elegant wall mirror, given to the District 9 office and inscribed:  Presented to District 9 and Official Nursing Bureau by Memorial Hospital Alumnae, February 22, 1935.

THE ADVOCATE

President’s Message
Dear TNA D9 Member,
This edition of THE ADVOCATE is dedicated to Nursing Celebration 2015. To think that 25 years ago, a group of dedicated nurse leaders
determined that it was time for Houston and for Texas to have an event that focused on the incredible accomplishments of outstanding nurses
in the greater Houston area! Nursing Celebration was born. I was there – and could not have imagined that we would find ourselves celebrating
yet again the contributions that nurses continue to make on the healthcare landscape of Houston and Texas.

2015 President’s Message

TNA9 President 2015Robert Blake, RN, MS, MBA, MDiv
President, Texas Nurses Association District 9

Welcome! You have found your way to the official website for Texas Nurses Association, District 9! Here you will pick up news about the activities of District 9 and for the Texas Nurses Association, headquartered in Austin, TX. Our goal is to connect to nurses in the greater Houston area to support the work we do every day on behalf of our patients, their families, and our healthcare system. Nurses are in every conceivable role from advanced practice to the very closest point of contact with patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Your membership in Texas Nurses Association, District 9, ensures that we have the funding needed to protect our practice act, interact cohesively with our legislators in Austin, and inform our membership base about issues of concern to all of us. If you are not yet a member, please consider joining us at the local, state, and/or national level. Because of the Texas Nurses Association, Texas nurses enjoy a voice in our governmental structure, ongoing educational efforts to keep us current in practice, and venues where we can come together to recognize each other’s incredible achievements.

We have restructured our membership meetings to be relevant to practicing nurses, contain pertinent CE’s and they are open to everyone, member or not. We are working to set up a network of locations for nurses to come together and we have central Houston meetings as well as a subdistrict meeting in The Woodlands/Spring area. Meeting times and days vary, so check our website for what is coming!

Known as the longest running nurse led recognition program for nurses, Nursing Celebration turns 25 this year and we are pulling out all the stops to create a fun-filled evening. This year, Nursing Celebration’s Silver Gala will be held at The Westin Galleria on Thursday night, November 12th. You will have a chance to meet the leadership of the Texas Nurses Association, participate in a Silent Auction with great offerings, and be a part of the history that is made every time a nurse is recognized for doing what we all do every day! The best of the best will be there and we want you to be there as well!

Be proud of who you are! Nurses are Rock Stars in every sense of the word! Come celebrate with us on November 12th and then celebrate with us throughout the year as we pursue excellence in nursing practice, engaging work environments, and energetic work at paving the way for nurses to enter practice in the future!

Regards,
Robert Blake, RN, MS, MBA, MDiv
President
